The ILOVEYOU virus came from the Philippines acting as a ‘worm.’ A worm is a virus that is able to replicate itself while sending itself through networks. This worm, ILOVEYOU, disguised itself as an email from a secret admirer and included a text file titled ‘LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.’ Once this text file was opened, the worm would come out and secretly latch itself onto files and steal passwords and private information, sending the information to the original hacker’s email.
Although we have understood that the ILOVEYOU virus had come from the Philippines, it is still unknown who the original creator of the virus was. We assumed it to be a man by the name of Onel de Guzman. However there was not enough evidence to prove this.
The ILOVEYOU virus caused $10 billion in damages and came out just a few months after the Melissa virus, on May 5th, 2000.
